In March, Google announced Project Tango, a device capable of capturing 3D images.  It is rumoured that 4,000 devices with be made next month, though Google will not comment on any rumours.
Google’s tablet will have two rear-facing cameras with imaging software incredibly advanced.  Google will be having their developer’s conference at the end of June, where the tablet will be on display.

Google has made plans to bring 3D software to handheld devices before and 200 developers were given smartphones to try out this new technology.  The technology is quite advanced and uses infrared sensors in order to measure depth perception.  Although capturing 3D images is not new, Google hopes to use 3D imaging for its mapping software.  For instance, smartphones could be used to map indoor areas and environments in 3D.
Google will give a small number of engineers and developers their new technology in order to test it out before launching it with consumers.  They also did this with Google Glass eyewear.
Virtual Reality (VR) is definitely on the rise and the race is on between those who want to create the next best application for building and interacting with VR environments.   In March, Facebook made a $2bn (£1.2bn) deal for Oculus VR’s headsets.
But what are the plans for project Tango?  A mini-site was created that issued statements over what the plans are:
  • “Project Tango is an attempt to create a mobile device unlike like any other.”
  • It is “A mobile device that shares our sense of space and movement, that understands and perceives the world the same way we do.”
In the past, 3D capable devices have been released but they have flopped due to consumer disinterest as well as poor quality or flaws in the system.  If Google gets involved, however, the market could drastically change!
We shall have to wait and see.
