Mumbai, May 7 -- It has always been a popular franchise in India, so it comes as no surprise that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has fared impressively at the Indian box office.
The Andrew Garfield-starrer's all-India net box office collection was over ' 28 crore on the opening weekend. The film hit screens on May 1 (it was released in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telegu). With that figure, it has surpassed the collections of several Bollywood films, like Main Tera Hero, Bhoothnath Returns, Queen, Dedh Ishqiya, which released this year.
Makers of the Spider-Man film claim that their latest movie has crossed the record set by its predecessor. According to the official press release, it has posted the highest-ever opening for a Hollywood film in India (it apparently grossed ' 41.7 crore on its four-day opening weekend).
"It's a huge franchise that already has a big connect with audiences. Plus, with the kind of cinematography, special effects and budgets such films have, people are bound to be in awe of their larger-than-life treatment," says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
Going by the figures this year, only Jai Ho (over ' 58 crore), Gunday (over ' 40 crore) and 2 States (over ' 36 crore) have got bigger opening weekend than the Hollywood film. "Spider-Man is possibly the most famous superhero amongst kids in India. Iron Man, Captain America and the others are becoming famous now," says exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi.
And experts agree that such a response is largely reserved for big-ticket franchises and not every film made. Film-maker Milan Luthria adds, "Also, thanks to Hollywood films, a number of subjects that otherwise wouldn't have found acceptance, have an audience now," he says.
